Choosing where to stay in Zanzibar is one of the most important decisions you'll make when planning your trip. The island is bigger than most people expect, and each area has a completely different atmosphere, beach quality and set of activities. Here's a breakdown of every major area to help you decide.
The island's historic old capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit for any traveller. Staying here puts you in the heart of Zanzibar's culture — ancient mosques, carved wooden doors, bustling markets and the famous Forodhani Night Market on your doorstep. It's not a beach destination but it's the best base for day trips across the island.

On the northern tip of the island, Nungwi is Zanzibar's most popular beach destination. The beach faces west (brilliant sunsets), is swimmable at any tide, and has the widest range of accommodation from budget guesthouses to 5-star resorts. The area is lively and social with beach bars, restaurants and water sports.
💡 LOCAL TIP
If you want sunset views from your resort, book accommodation on the western or northern side of Nungwi — not the eastern side, which faces away from the sunset.
Just 3km south of Nungwi, Kendwa is quieter and more intimate. The famous full-moon beach parties at Kendwa Rocks draw a fun crowd once a month, but day-to-day the beach is relaxed and uncrowded. Perfect for couples who want Nungwi's beach quality without the bustle.
On the north-east coast, Matemwe offers some of the most beautiful and secluded stretches of beach on the island. Fewer resorts, fewer tourists, and a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. The snorkelling offshore is excellent, and it's a short boat trip to Mnemba Atoll. A luxury choice for those who want to escape.
Paje on the East Coast is a world-class kite surfing destination with a bohemian, backpacker-friendly vibe. The beach is stunning and the atmosphere is social and laid-back. Note the tidal range here is significant — swimming is only possible around high tide.
A traditional fishing village with long stretches of quiet beach, affordable guesthouses and a genuinely local atmosphere. Seaweed farming women work the tidal flats, fishing boats come in at dawn, and life moves at its own unhurried pace. The most authentic area to stay on the island.
The best Zanzibar holiday combines areas. We recommend 2 nights in Stone Town for culture, then 4–5 nights at a beach resort in Nungwi or Kendwa. If you have 10+ days, add 2 nights in Paje or Matemwe for a contrast of pace and atmosphere.
