Ask any experienced Zanzibar traveller and they'll tell you the same thing: the choice between Nungwi and Paje defines your holiday. Both are spectacular, but they attract very different types of traveller and offer a completely different experience. Here's an honest breakdown.
Nungwi sits on the northern tip of Zanzibar, about 55km from the airport — roughly 1.5 hours by car. Paje is on the East Coast, just 55km from Stone Town but only about 45 minutes from the airport. Both are accessible by shared dala-dala buses (cheap but slow) or private taxis.
This is where the biggest difference lies. Nungwi's beach is swimmable at any time of day, any tide. Because it faces west and north at the island's tip, the tidal range is minimal. The water stays at the shore. This is a huge advantage.
Paje sits on the East Coast, which has one of the most dramatic tidal ranges in the world — up to 3 metres. At low tide, the sea retreats several hundred metres, leaving exposed seagrass and coral flats. Swimming at low tide is impossible. You plan your day around the tides. If you don't check the tide times, you might arrive at the beach to find no water.
💡 LOCAL TIP
If you're staying in Paje, download a tide app before you arrive. 'Tide Alert' works well. The lagoon at high tide is absolutely beautiful — crystal clear, warm, and shallow. But you need to time it right.
Nungwi is livelier. There are beach bars, sunset spots, restaurants and a social scene that draws a mix of couples, families and groups. It has a resort-town feel — well-established, lots of options, easy to navigate. The famous Kendwa Rocks full-moon parties are nearby.
Paje is more bohemian and international. It's the kite-surfing capital of East Africa, which draws a younger, more active crowd — instructors, digital nomads, independent travellers. The atmosphere is laid-back and unpretentious. There are fewer big resorts and more boutique guesthouses and bungalows.
If kite surfing is on your agenda — even just as a beginner — Paje wins outright. The consistent south-easterly trade winds and the vast shallow lagoon at low tide create near-perfect conditions. Multiple schools operate here with well-trained instructors. Nungwi has no comparable kite surfing scene.
For snorkelling, Nungwi has the edge. It's the jumping-off point for trips to Mnemba Atoll — one of the best snorkelling and diving sites in the Indian Ocean. Most dive operators are based in Nungwi or nearby Matemwe. Paje has snorkelling available but the sites are less impressive.

Nungwi has more restaurants and a busier evening scene with beach bars open late. Paje has a smaller but very good selection of restaurants and a more relaxed evening atmosphere — dinners on the beach, bonfires, early nights.
